the culture show/ Autograph roadshow Hackney 12 February 2011

I am presenting a report for The Culture Show about the secret history of Britain through unseen photographs from black and Asian Britons. This Saturday there will be a roadshow in Hackney where you can bring your personal photographs- family pics, holiday pics, anything you think would be of interest to others. The roadshow is being organised by Autograph ABP which is a charity that works internationally to educate the public in photography, with a particular emphasis on issues of cultural identity and human rights. They believe that the ‘real’ story of multi-cultural Britain cannot be told without the inclusion of images by amateur photographers, whose family pictures reveal another aspect of a complex and diverse country.

Unearthing the hidden treasures of personal archives, the vernacular photographs in Autograph’s collection bear witness to the potential transformation of the family album into powerful narratives of community, memory, history, and identity.

This event on Saturday is all about trying to unlock, document and preserve the real-life, magical moments that form part of everyone’s family archive. From birthday and street parties to intimate scenes of domestic life and high street studio portraits, Autograph ABP is interested to see what your cupboards hold, in order to capture a social history that is often neglected yet represents an integral part of our wider cultural heritage.

The Roadshow is at Hackney Museum, 1 Reading Lane, between 12 and 4pm on
Saturday 12 February so please do come along!
